GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia announced that House Speaker Mike Johnson promised to formalize his investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack as a new committee. This is part of a broader Republican effort to continue investigations from the last Congress now that they control both chambers of Congress and the White House.
Loudermilk explained that the committee’s details are still being worked out, with one possibility being that Johnson will have more control over the selection of members and the committee’s structure. The new committee will highlight Loudermilk’s efforts, including a report calling for the FBI to charge former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, keeping the focus on Trump’s role in the attack.
Johnson has confirmed the new investigation will be “fully funded.” Beyond the January 6 inquiry, Republicans have also reissued subpoenas related to special counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents and the Hunter Biden case.
Meanwhile, California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff is considering rejecting a pardon issued by President Biden to individuals involved in the January 6 investigation, including himself. Schiff expressed concerns about potential backlash, given his previous stance that accepting a pardon implies guilt.
Legal experts noted that the pardons don’t exempt recipients like Cheney and Dr. Anthony Fauci from testifying under oath if subpoenaed, and they could still face consequences if they lie during testimony.
