Age might be just a number, but it can cause awkward moments when it comes to grocery discounts. A shopper shared on Reddit that they were mortified after receiving a “senior discount” at the store, even though they were only 48.
“Checked my receipt and found this… I’m 48,” the shopper posted, with a photo showing the “SENIOR DISCOUNT” label. The discount applied to items like corned beef, ham, fruit juice, and blueberries, saving them a total of $2.05 on a $50.75 bill. They felt uncomfortable, as senior discounts usually apply to those 65 and older.
However, many Reddit users thought the shopper was overreacting, encouraging them to enjoy the unexpected savings. Some even suggested the cashier might have given the discount out of kindness or frustration. One commenter shared that they had received a senior discount at a bagel shop despite being in their 30s due to their loyalty.
Though it’s uncommon, some stores and restaurants offer discounts for customers as young as 50, like Fred Meyer and Krispy Kreme.
