Rich Old Man Dresses as Homeless and Visits Huge Grocery Store to Determine His Heir – Story of the Day

When Mr. Larry Hutchins turned 90, the idea of not having a will started to worry him. One day, he decided to disguise himself as a homeless man and visit his own grocery store in search of a worthy heir. However, finding someone suitable was not as easy as he expected.

At 90, Mr. Hutchins was the owner of the largest grocery store in Texas. He was still physically attractive, with hazel eyes and silver hair, but his demanding business life had left him with no wife or children. As he grew older, the thought of dying without an heir became a pressing concern.

He wasn’t inclined to donate his wealth to charity, wanting to ensure it went to someone who would truly appreciate it. He considered giving it to a friend, but after years of business experience, he knew that friends could easily become enemies in such environments. So, he turned to his lawyer, William Carter, for advice.

“Do you have any distant relatives?” the lawyer asked. Mr. Hutchins responded by sharing his lonely childhood and how he had come to Texas with nothing, eventually building his wealth from scratch. He wanted to leave his fortune to someone who understood hard work, not just family connections.

After a brief discussion, Mr. Hutchins agreed to give his lawyer some time to think about it and arrange a meeting later. But after the call, he felt disheartened and uncertain about finding a solution.

The next day, Mr. Hutchins sat in his study, trying to come up with a list of potential heirs, but none came to mind. Frustrated, he tossed his pen aside. Then, an idea hit him—what if he tested his employees to see who truly understood the value of hard work?

The next morning, he dressed in old clothes, wore a fake beard, and carried a second-hand cane before heading to his store. He hoped his employees and customers might reveal someone worthy of inheriting his estate.

When he entered, the cashier, Lincy, harshly told him to leave, accusing him of being a beggar. He tried to explain he was just hungry, but she dismissed him coldly. He moved through the store, but people reacted similarly—customers mocked his appearance, and employees seemed eager to get rid of him.

Just as he was about to leave, a voice from behind stopped him. It was Lewis, the store administrator, who was a 25-year-old college dropout. He immediately stood up for Mr. Hutchins, ordering the staff to back off. He apologized to the old man, led him inside, and personally filled a basket with groceries.

When they reached the checkout, Mr. Hutchins was moved to tears. He thanked Lewis, then asked why he had chosen to help him when everyone else had been so rude.

Lewis shared his story: when he had nothing, he had come to Mr. Hutchins for a job. The store owner had hired him, even paying for a place to live, and teaching him the value of hard work. That moment, Lewis explained, had made him realize the importance of kindness.

Mr. Hutchins smiled, realizing he had found his heir. Seven years later, when Mr. Hutchins passed away, Lewis received a call from the lawyer, who informed him that Mr. Hutchins had left him everything, along with a letter explaining why he had chosen him, and the true reason behind his disguise.
