Police Release New Details in Death of Sports Reporter Adan Manzano; Charges Filed
Police have released more information about the death of 27-year-old Adan Manzano, a sports reporter for KGKC Telemundo Kansas City, who was found unresponsive in his New Orleans hotel room on February 6, 2025, while covering Super Bowl LIX.
Kenner Police say Manzano died from a fatal combination of alcohol, Xanax, and positional asphyxia. His blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit, and he was found face-down on a pillow, consistent with asphyxiation. The official manner of death remains undetermined.
Two people have been charged in connection with the case. Danette Colbert faces a second-degree murder charge, while Ricky White was arrested on theft charges. Colbert, who has a history of drugging and robbing victims, was caught on hotel surveillance entering Manzano’s room. Police say his credit card was later used at multiple locations.
Manzano had traveled to New Orleans to cover the Super Bowl for both Telemundo Kansas City and Tico Sports, calling it a dream assignment. He was known for his Spanish-language coverage of the Kansas City Chiefs and KC Current and had become a rising star in sports journalism.
Colleagues and city leaders, including Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, praised Manzano’s passion, work ethic, and dedication to the Latino community. His employer remembered him as “an exceptional professional” who brought energy and heart to every broadcast.
Tragically, Manzano leaves behind his young daughter, Eleanor, who had already lost her mother, Ashleigh LeeAnn Boyd, in a car crash the year before. Manzano often spoke lovingly of his daughter and shared moments of fatherhood on social media.
The investigation is ongoing, but Manzano’s legacy in sports media and the community he served continues to be honored by those who knew and admired him.
