Former Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) called his corruption case a “political prosecution” and referenced President Donald Trump’s legal issues as evidence of a corrupt justice system, after being sentenced to 11 years in prison.
“President Trump was right,” Menendez said outside court. “This process is politically driven and corrupt. I hope President Trump restores integrity to the system.”
Menendez was convicted last year for accepting bribes in exchange for political favors and resigned from the Senate shortly after. He was found guilty of acting as a foreign agent for Egypt while in office, making him the first U.S. official convicted of such a crime.
His comments come as Trump’s Justice Department seeks to halt prosecutions involving his political allies. Menendez declined to say if he’s seeking a pardon from Trump.
Menendez was also embroiled in a corruption probe involving his wife, who was reportedly bribed for his influence in a state insurance fraud case. He has not ruled out an independent re-election bid, possibly to raise funds for his legal costs.
