Texas Congressman Sylvester Turner Passes Away After Attending Trump’s Address
Texas Rep. Sylvester Turner, former Houston mayor, has died at 70. His cause of death remains unconfirmed, though reports say he had been battling jaw cancer.
Turner was seen at the U.S. Capitol before Trump’s congressional address. In one of his final posts, he condemned Medicaid cuts, calling them a “betrayal of the most vulnerable.”
Elected in 2024, Turner filled the seat of the Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. He served as Houston’s mayor from 2016 to 2024 and was known for his dedication to public service.
Colleagues mourned his loss, with Texas Rep. Brandon Weber saying, “Just last night, we spoke on the House Floor—life is too short.”
A University of Houston and Harvard Law graduate, Turner leaves behind a lasting legacy in Texas politics.
