House voted to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) after he was removed for disrupting former President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night. The measure passed with support from ten Democrats, while Green voted “present.”
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) called Green’s outburst a sign of division within the Democratic Party. The ten Democrats who backed the censure included Reps. Ami Bera (D-CA), Ed Case (D-HI), Jim Costa (D-CA), Laura Gillen (D-NY), and others.
Republicans swiftly introduced multiple censure resolutions, with Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) leading the effort. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) ordered Green’s removal after he repeatedly interrupted Trump’s speech, shouting, “You have no mandate!”
Johnson urged Democrats to support the censure, arguing Green deliberately broke House rules. Green defended his actions, stating his protest was intentional and rooted in his belief that all Americans deserve quality healthcare.
