President Donald Trump announced on social media that he plans to visit Fort Knox, Kentucky, to verify the gold reserves stored there.
“We’re going to Fort Knox to make sure the gold is there,” Trump said in a video on X, adding, “We hope everything is fine, but we want to check.” When asked what would happen if it was missing, he responded, “We’re going to be very upset.”
Fort Knox holds approximately 147.3 million ounces of gold, valued at around $435 billion. The depository has safeguarded U.S. reserves since 1937, with few outside inspections. The last major viewing was in 1943, with later visits in 1974 and 2017.
Speaking to Republican governors, Trump reiterated, “We’re going to open the doors and inspect Fort Knox. I don’t want to find the cupboards bare.”
Located 35 miles south of Louisville, Fort Knox also serves as a key Army facility. Built in 1936, it is one of the most secure sites in the world. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said he is open to arranging an inspection for any senator interested in viewing the vaults.
