It was a tale of two very different pardons.
Before leaving office, President Joe Biden issued pardons to several family members, including his brother James Biden, sister Valerie Owens, and others. On his first day back in office, former President Donald Trump pardoned over 1,500 individuals tied to the January 6th events.
The media response was drastically different. According to a Media Research Center analysis, ABC, CBS, and NBC spent just 3 minutes and 32 seconds covering Biden’s pardons, but 46 minutes and 32 seconds on Trump’s. ABC spent over 15 minutes on Trump, NBC over 14 minutes, and CBS over 16 minutes, while Biden’s pardons received only brief coverage.
Biden also pardoned figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci and Gen. Mark Milley, explaining that politically motivated investigations can harm innocent people. However, his actions contradicted a 2020 promise not to issue pardons for family or political allies. Even Chuck Schumer had condemned the idea back then. Given the media’s brief coverage, it’s unlikely they addressed the contrast between Biden’s pardons and his previous stance.
