How to take care of your ears

Taking care of your ears is important to maintain good hearing and avoid potential issues like infections or hearing loss. Here are some tips:

1. Clean your ears properly

  • Avoid Q-tips: Inserting cotton swabs into the ear canal can push wax deeper, potentially causing blockages or damage to the ear drum. Clean the outer ear with a damp cloth instead.
  • Use ear drops if needed: If you have excessive earwax, over-the-counter ear drops can help soften it, but avoid using sharp objects like bobby pins to clean your ears.

2. Protect your ears from loud noises

  • Wear ear protection: If you’re in a loud environment (concerts, construction sites, or when using power tools), use earplugs or earmuffs to protect your hearing.
  • Follow the 60/60 rule: If you’re using headphones or earbuds, keep the volume at no more than 60% of the maximum volume, and limit usage to 60 minutes at a time.

3. Keep ears dry

  • Avoid moisture buildup: Moisture can lead to infections like swimmer’s ear. Dry your ears carefully after swimming or showering.
  • Use ear plugs when swimming: If you’re prone to ear infections, consider using waterproof earplugs while swimming.

4. Avoid inserting objects into the ear canal

  • Don’t insert objects: Avoid putting anything smaller than your elbow into your ear, including cotton swabs, pens, or hairpins, as they can damage the ear canal and ear drum.

5. Get regular hearing check-ups

  • Visit an audiologist: If you notice any changes in your hearing, such as difficulty understanding speech or ringing in the ears (tinnitus), it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.

6. Manage ear infections

  • Seek treatment: If you experience pain, fluid drainage, or a feeling of fullness in the ear, it could be an infection. Get it treated early to prevent complications.

By following these practices, you can help maintain healthy ears and prevent potential issues down the line.
